If that sounds familiar, you're not imagining it. Stress and your bladder are more closely connected than most people realise, and there's a good reason why.
The stress-bladder connection
Your bladder doesn't work alone. It takes its cues from your brain, which decides when it's a good time to pee and when to hold on. When you're under pressure, that system can get a little jumpy.
The link tends to work both ways. Bladder symptoms can understandably cause stress, but research suggests that ongoing stress can also contribute to frequency and urgency in its own right. In one small study, women with overactive bladder reported a stronger sense of urgency after completing a stressful task.
Where serotonin comes in
Serotonin, the brain chemical best known for steadying your mood, also helps keep your bladder relaxed while it fills so when stress throws it off balance, your bladder may feel the effects too.
Much of this research comes from animal studies, so scientists are still piecing together exactly how it works in people. But it could help explain why anxiety and low mood are so often linked with a busy bladder.
Two calming practices to try
1. Pause and breathe through an urge
When a sudden urge hits, stop where you are, take a few slow breaths and let the wave pass before heading to the loo. Rushing tends to tell your brain it's an emergency pausing tells it the opposite.
Why it helps
Interrupts the panic response
Gives the urge time to fade
Builds confidence over time
It's a small habit with some promising science behind it. In a pilot study, women who completed an eight-week mindfulness course were more likely to report that their urge leaks had improved than those who took yoga classes.
2. Build a five-minute wind-down
At the end of a hectic day, set aside a few minutes to properly switch off. A short walk, some gentle stretches, or sitting quietly with a cup of chamomile all count.
Why it helps
Signals the day is done
Lowers background tension
Pairs well with your bedtime routine
Stress often builds quietly, so a small daily release valve can stop it spilling over into your evenings and your nights.
Small steps, not a stress-free life
A stressful week now and then is part of life, and a few extra trips to the loo aren't usually cause for concern. The key isn't to eliminate stress entirely (that's a tall order for anyone) but to notice when your bladder is reacting and give yourself a moment to reset.
One reason why we include pumpkin seed, sage and rosemary in CoreCTRL and SleepTHRU is to help keep the bladder still enough to offset any stress signals that may arise. They work directly on the smooth muscle of the bladder to allow it to quieten down enough to hold for longer.
If urgency sticks around long after the stress has passed, or if anxiety or low mood is weighing on you, it's worth speaking to your GP. They can help with both.
